Hot August Days - Kootenai River Idaho Fishing report 8 7 2020

Okay, I was expecting some hot days last week, but I didn’t expect *HOT* days! I think the temps were over a 100 degrees in the canyons a few times, but I may be exaggerating. The coming week promises to be only in the low to mid 80’s but I’m starting to have trust issues…

One benefit of the heat we can hear the pleasant sounds of grasshoppers on the banks. Although the hopper pattern hasn’t been super productive, I have been throwing some purple foam patterns with positive results late in the day. Hopefully the trout will key into hoppers soon and we can all enjoy the hopper season together! Meanwhile, I’ve been using a Hendrickson Sparkle Dun pattern with success this week as well as swinging trout spey flies in black and mottled brown (a orange hot spot in the rear). I do love tying those trout spey patterns, so much material in one fly!

The river is holding at 10K cfs at the Idaho state line, but the forecast plans a drop on August 10th to about 9,700 cfs. The Temperatures last week ranged 60 to 64 degrees. Next week should cool off a bit. The weather forecast for the next week also includes a little cloud cover and slight chances of rain. I’m looking forward to cooler days to fish and hoping the fish are looking up!
